As part of government’s effort to boost local production of poultry, 1,500 farmers in 10 regions would be supported with 30,000 brooded cockerels to enhance their capacity to produce more meat to reduce the nation’s meat deficit and also to increase income of the farmers.
LIVESTOCK PRODUCTION MANUALS
To enhance livestock extension delivery, 20,000 copies of livestock production and Dry season feeding manuals will be developed and printed for distribution to farmers.
By way of modernizing livestock production and to reduce the system of extensive rearing of livestock (where animals are left on their own without housing, thereby resulting in high incidence of theft and spread of diseases) 10 Livestock Demonstration Centers will be established in 10 livestock dominant districts. This will enhance the adoption of good husbandry practices among over 50,000 livestock farmers annually.
GUINEA FOWL PRODUCTION
Forty (40) enterprising guinea fowl farmer in 40 districts across the 3 northern regions will be supported with 40 incubators. This is an intervention to enhance increased guinea fowl production.
ANIMAL FEED QUALITY CONTROL
The APD in collaboration with relevant stakeholders would pursue animal feed quality control vigorously through regularly monitoring of commercial feedmillers in the country. Sampling and content analysis of animal feed produced by all feed mills across the country would be carried out to ensure compliance to standards in poultry feeds in the country and the public would be informed accordingly.
