58 years old opinion leader, Alhaji Awudu Karim  is the 2013 National Best Farmer. He beat two others to be adjudged the overall best  farmer for  2013.


He started farming in 1978 after his secondary education and currently has 740 cattle, 420 sheep, 360 goats, 6 pairs of bullocks, 410 guinea fowls and 220 fowls.

He also own 110 acres of maize, 120 acres of rice, 25 acres of groundnut, 30 sorghum and a 600 acre mango plantation.

Best practices

Alhaji Awudu Karim has diversified his farming activities through the use of appropriate technologies delivered to him by the Agricultural Extension Agent within his area of operation.

He also keeps up-to-date records of his farming enterprises to help him determine whether his farming enterprises are making profit or loss to determine remedial measures to improve the farming enterprises.

Socio-economc contributions

In the area of community development, Alhaji Awudu Karim brings his farming experiences and benevolence to bear on community members by assisting them in ploughing their fields even sometimes without charging for service with his tractors and bullocks especially to the vulnerable,  he is the President of Paga Development Association, President of Paga Footfall Association, member of District Value Chain Committee (DVCC) for Northern Rural Growth Programme (NRGP) and provides employment for seven people.

Alhaji Awudu Karim owns a Freight and Forwarding Company named ALHAJI AWUDU CLEARING AND FORWARDING AGENCY with branches in Tema, Paga, Takoradi, Hamile, Tumu and Aflao. He is also an agent in the same industry.

Past awards

In 2010 he was adjudged first National Best Livestock Farmer.

As his Prize Alhaji received a 3-bed room fully furnished house to be built on a land provided by him at a place of his choice, a 5 kv Generator  set, a Life Insurance cover, Agri-business Insurance cover, an all-expense paid trip abroad to witness  an Agricultural show, Beverages from Accra Brewery Limited and Guiness Ghana Brewery Limited,  Pieces of Cloth, Agro Inputs and one jumbo size Poly tank for water storage.
