56 Year old Alhaji Yakubu Jagaji from Dajan in the Sissala West District of the Upper West Region emerged as the 2013 National Best Livestock Farmer.
With over 35 years’ experience in farming, Alhaji Yakubu Jagaji holdings includes 2,995 cattle, 364 sheep, 60 goats, 110 poultry (All types) and 15 donkeys.
In the area of crops, he has cultivated 128 acres of maize, 7 acres of groundnut and 1 acre of cowpea.
His farm machinery includes 1 tractor, 25 pairs of bullocks, 5 single donkey carts and a Toyota pickup which he uses in his operations.
Aside his holdings and machinery, Alhaji Jagali also employs other best practices such as keeping records of all his holdings (both livestock and crops), engaging the services of field agricultural extension agent (AEA) and veterinary technicians for constant agricultural advice and the combination of both organic and inorganic fertilizers in his farms as he practices
As part of his social and economic responsibilities to the community, he regularly pays his livestock taxes annually to the Sissala West District Assembly, continually assist other needy farmers during the farming season by ploughing for them using animal traction and tractor.
He has also constructed several praying centers (mosques) in all the communities where his livestock is in addition to a bore hole in each of his 5 kraals for livestock watering.
Alhaji Yakubu Jagali has a total work force of 56 staff that helps in the running of his business.
In 2006, Alhaji was adjudged the Upper West Regional Best Livestock Farmer.
Alhaji Yakubu Jagaji is married with four wives and twenty-two children.
For his prize, Alhaji Yakubu Jagaji received a A tractor with trailer, plough and harrow, assorted drinks from Accra Brewery Ltd and Guinness Ghana Brewery, beverages from Nestle Ghana Ltd, veterinary drugs and a certificate signed by the President of the Republic of Ghana.
