The Afram Plains Project consists of two (2) pilot schemes. The projects lie to the west of the plains in the Eastern region and are designed to operate on the sprinkler system. These projects were established purposely for people displaced by the flooding of the Volta Lake in 1964.
This was started in 1976, located between latitude 0o 24′ and 0o 26′ E and longitude 6o 38 and 6o 40′ N. the potential area for cultivation is 202 ha. Presently however, there is no cropping activity going due to break down of all the pumps. This is one of the schemes to be rehabilitated under the 2nd phase of the Millennium Challenge Account (MCA).
Started in 1976, this project is located between latitude 0o 20′ and 0o 15 E and longitude 6o 34′ and 6o 38′ N.
The potential area for cultivation is 400 ha but only 20 ha is presently being cropped. Crops cultivated include tomatoes, pepper, maize, etc.
The project head-works essentially consist of mobile pumps, which pump water from the Volta Lake to irrigate the fields by a sprinkler system. The pumps are of the PERROT type and each has a horsepower of 56.
The mobile pumps are moved around as the lake recedes especially during the dry season. Currently, they are all broken down, except only one (1) pump working at Dedeso. This is one of the schemes to be rehabilitated under the 2nd phase of the MCA.
