Background Information

The scheme is located in the Brong Ahafo region of Ghana and lies between latitude 7o 42’ to 7o 48’ and longitude 2o W. Subinja is about 20 km from Wenchi. Work on the project commenced in 1974 and was commissioned in 1976. The project has a gross area of about 121 ha and a net irrigable area of about 60 ha. However, the present average area under irrigation is about 18 ha. The source of water is the Subin River.

Climate

The mean annual rainfall of Subinja in the transitional zone falls within 1253 mm. The highest rainfall is between Septembers to October.

The mean annual temperature is 26 oC with no much variation. The relative humidity is 75.1%, wind speed 133 km/day, average sunshine 6.2 hours per day and solar radiation 4.53 mm/day. Vegetation is semi-deciduous forest, woodlands and some grasses.

Headworks And Infrastructure

The irrigation system of the Subinja project consists of:

1. A dam and concrete weir across the river Subin

2. Four pumps units of 34 hp each

3. 100 mm diameter pipelines and 50 mm diameter laterals and sprinkler heads
