Background Information

Construction of Bontanga Irrigation Project was started in 1978 and completed in 1983. The project was funded by the Ghana Government. The project consists of an earthen dam that delivers water to the field by gravity and incorporated in the embankment are two (2) off-takes and a spillway, which is set to control the top water level in the reservoir. The gross area is 570ha of this under irrigation. The main crops grown and the respective average yield are presented below:

Headwork’s Infrastructure

The project is an earthfill dam of height 12m with a crest level of 5.00m. The spillway level is at an elevation of 5.8m and the surface area at the spillway elevation is 770m2. The reservoir capacity is 25.00Mm3. The dead storage elevation is about 1.52m and the dead storage capacity is 5.00Mm3. The spillway type is drop inlet with a length of 83.7m and a design discharge of 85m3/sec. An emergency spillway is also provided.
