Introduction

The Western Region covers an area of approximately 239,221 square kilometers, which is 10% of Ghana total area.  The region has 17 agricultural districts.  The regional capital is Sekondi-Takoradi which is the seat of Regional Directorate of Agriculture.

Vegetation

The region has about 75% of its vegetation within high forest zone of Ghana and lies in the equatorial climate zone that is characterized by moderate temperatures.

Rainfall

It is the wettest part of Ghana with an average rainfall of 1600 mm per annum.

 

BACKGROUND

The region is one of the ten (10) Regions of the Republic of |Ghana.  Geographically, Volta Region lies at the eastern side of Ghana.  Volta Region share common boundaries with four (4) major regions of Ghana namely, Greater Accra, Eastern, BrongAhafo and Northern regions.

Volta Region is divided into 18 administrative districts namely Adaklu  Anyigbe, South Dayi (Kpeve), North Dayi (Kpando, South Tongu (Sogakope), North Tongu (|Adidome), South Ketu, North Ketu, South Nkwanta, North Nkwanta, Ho Municipal, Hohoe Municipal, Jasikan, Kadjebi, Krachi East, Krachi West, Biakoye and Keta.

LOCATION

The Volta Region is located at 3o 45’ latitude N and 8o 45’ longitude N; it covers a total land area of 20572 km2 and stretches from the coast of Gulf Guinea running through all the vegetational zones found in the country.

 

General Information

Location and size

The Upper West Region is at the North-Western corner of the country. It is bordered to the south by the Northern Region, to the east by the Upper East and Northern Regions, and to the north and west by the Republic of Burkina Faso. It lies between longitudes 1o25’W and 2o50’W, and between latitudes 9o35N and 11oN. The region covers a geographical area of 18,476 sq. km, constituting 12.7% of the total land area of Ghana.

Topography and Drainage

The region is geologically part of the high plains that cover most of the North-Western part of Ghana. These are characterized by a series of wide plateaus made up of Birrimian and post-Birrimian granites and their weathered materials. The surfaces have been leveled by denudation. Occasional granitic outcrops rise above them (SRI, unpublished).

 

Physical and Natural Environment

Location and Size:

  • The Upper East Region is located at Lat. 10o15’ and 10o10’N, Long. 0o and 1o4’W
  • It is bounded: North by Republic of Burkina Faso, South by Northern Region and East and West by Republic of Togo and Upper West Region respectively.
  • Area – 8,842km(3.7% of Ghana)
  • Population Density – 103 persons/km2

Topography and Drainage

It is predominantly undulating, with slopes less than 1%.  The region is mainly gentle slopes ranging from 1% to 5% slopes; however, about 70% of it is subject to moderate to severe sheet and gully erosion.

Erosion is a problem. Valley areas have soils ranging from sandy candy loams to salty clays with higher natural fertility but are more difficult to till and are prone to seasonal water logging and floods. Drainage is mainly by the White and Red Volta and Sissili Rivers (Regional Coordinating Unit, 2003).
