Central Gonja

DISTRICT CAPITAL – CENTRAL GONJA (BUIPE)

TOPOGRAPHY AND DRAINAGE

The landform of the district is low lying but gently undulating at attitudes ranging between 150m – 300m above sea level though some parts average 600m. the area is traversed by two major rivers the White Volta which flows longitudinally through the district, and the Black Volta which forms the Southern Boundary, with Kintampo North District. A lot of the streams crisscross the district and flow into the two Volta Rivers.

GEOLOGY AND SOILS:

Soil types formed in the district are alluvial, laterite and savanna ochrosols. Alluvial soils are potentially fertile and are mostly found along the two Volta Rivers, their tributaries and the large plains.

CLIMATE:

The Central Gonja District lies within the Tropical Continental Zone. Annual rainfall is unevenly distributed and limited to six months from May to October. Mean annual rainfall ranges between 1000 – 1500mm with its pealed in September. It has a slight longer rainy season than the rest of the Northern Region. Relative humidity is between 70% and 90% during the long dry season.

Temperatures are generally high and exhibits seasonal variations. The district has a mean annual temperature of 35% with the maximum temperature of about 40⁰C usually recorded around March – April. Temperatures are lowest, on average 22%, between November and January due to the influence of the North -easterly winds otherwise known as harmatten.

VEGETATION:

The major tree species are sheanut, Dawadawa, Boobab, Acacia, Neem and few Ebony. These trees are scattered except in most valleys where isolated wood land or gallery forest are found. Most of these trees are deciduous, shedding their leaves during the dry season in order to conserve water. There exist one forest reserve called Yakumbo forest reserve which covers an area of about 1,200 hectors. It has a potential of producing durable wood for construction and energy.

ENVIRONMENTAL SITUATION:

There is massive depletion of the districts forest cover due to fuel wood cutting and charcoal burning. The shifting cultivation system of farming is also a very big cause of the depletion of the forest couple with the annual ritual of bush fires. The rate of forest depletion is estimated at 3% annually.

WATER SUPPLY:

Potable water is generally scarce in the district, less than 10% of the population has access to potable water. A few communities depend on boreholes and hand-dag-well for domestic and other uses. There are limited prospects for development of sustainable boreholes in the district because of its difficult hydrogeological terrain. Other sources of potable water thus need to be explored and develop. The District Capital Buipe is however connected to a small town pipe water system.

FISHERIES

Fish production is a major activity in the district, engaging about 30% of the people living along the Black and White Voltas. The fish is captured from the wild, smoked using local choker smokers built with mud. These production areas are Yapei, Buipe Tuluwe, Chama, Mpaha and Sheri areas along all the Volta Lakes.
