Kpone, Tema – February 12, 2026
The Minister for Food and Agriculture, Hon. Eric Opoku, has commissioned an expanded cold storage facility and cut the sod for the construction of a modern poultry value addition and processing complex at Kpone in the Greater Accra Region.
The project, owned by Beacon Source and Services Ltd., forms part of private sector support for Government’s flagship Feed Ghana Programme, which places strong emphasis on livestock development and particularly poultry as a catalyst for import substitution, job creation, and agro-industrial growth.
Addressing stakeholders at the ceremony, Hon. Opoku described the investment as a significant milestone in Ghana’s poultry transformation agenda and a strategic intervention to strengthen national food security.
He disclosed that Ghana currently spends between US$300 million and US$400 million annually on poultry imports, a situation he said underscores the urgent need to boost domestic production, processing capacity, and cold chain infrastructure.
“This investment is timely and aligns with Government’s commitment to revitalize the poultry industry and reduce dependence on imports,” the Minister stated.
He explained that under the Poultry Industry Revitalization sub-programme, Government is tackling structural constraints in the sector, including high feed costs, limited access to quality inputs, weak value-chain coordination, and inadequate processing facilities.
According to Hon. Opoku, the strategy focuses on supporting large-scale commercial farms, strengthening small- and medium-scale producers, and expanding household production through the Nkoko Nketenkete Backyard Poultry sub programme, with particular emphasis on supporting women, the youth, and the vulnerable.
The Minister noted that the expanded cold storage facility will improve food safety standards, reduce post-harvest losses, and stabilize poultry supply across the country. He added that the proposed processing complex will provide reliable off-take opportunities for farmers and enhance linkages between producers and structured markets.
Hon. Opoku commended Beacon Source and Services Ltd. for aligning its investment with national policy objectives and praised its partnership with Bostex Trading GmbH of Germany, which is expected to facilitate technology transfer and ensure adherence to international processing standards.
He also expressed appreciation to the German Ambassador and the German business community for their continued collaboration in advancing Ghana’s agro-industrial development.
The ceremony was attended by representatives of the German Chamber of Commerce, management of Beacon Source and Services Ltd., and other key stakeholders in the agriculture and agribusiness sectors.
The Minister for Food and Agriculture, Hon Eric Opoku reaffirmed his commitment to deepening public-private partnerships to strengthen Ghana’s poultry value chain and accelerate progress toward national food security and economic transformation.
