The Ministry of Food and Agriculture (MoFA) has officially launched the 42nd National Farmers' Day Celebration, calling on the private sector, development partners, financial institutions and other stakeholders to partner government in promoting agriculture and strengthening Ghana's food security.
The launch, held at the forecourt of the Ministry in Accra, on July 30th, marked the beginning of activities leading to this year's celebration, which will be hosted by the Bono Region under the theme, "Our Farmers, Our Food, and Our Future." The national awards ceremony will take place in Sunyani on Friday, December 4, 2026.
Launching the celebration, the Minister for Food and Agriculture, Hon. Eric Opoku, described the theme as a powerful reminder of the indispensable role farmers play in ensuring national food security, creating jobs and driving Ghana's economic growth.
"Our Farmers, Our Food, Our Future is more than a theme. It reminds us that when we support the farmer, we secure our food, and when we secure our food, we safeguard the future of our nation," he said.
The Minister noted that agriculture remains the foundation of Ghana’s economic development and reaffirmed government's commitment to repositioning the sector as a modern, profitable and job-creating enterprise capable of attracting young people, supporting industry and strengthening the national economy.
He also unveiled the programme of activities, which will begin with a five-day National Agricultural Fair from November 30 to December 4, 2026. Organized in partnership with Agrihouse Foundation, the fair will bring together farmers, agribusinesses, researchers, development partners, financial institutions and input suppliers to showcase innovations, technologies, products and investment opportunities within the agricultural sector.
As part of the week-long celebration, the Ministry will also host a National Farmers' Forum to facilitate dialogue among farmers, policymakers, the private sector and development partners on issues affecting the agricultural sector and farmers' welfare. The celebration will culminate in the Grand Durbar and National Farmers' Awards Ceremony on Friday, December 4, where outstanding farmers and other actors across the agricultural value chain will be honoured.
The Minister announced that 32 substantive national award categories have been approved to recognise excellence in crop production, livestock, fisheries, cocoa, agricultural extension, agricultural research, women and youth in agriculture, persons with disabilities, farmer cooperatives and other key areas of agricultural production.
Hon. Opoku appealed to Corporate Ghana, development partners and financial institutions to support the celebration through sponsorship, describing such contributions as investments in Ghana's food security, rural livelihoods and economic development.
"Supporting National Farmers' Day is not merely supporting an event. It is supporting food security, rural livelihoods, agribusiness growth and the future of our country," he stressed.
He further encouraged Ghanaians to support locally produced food as a way of strengthening domestic agricultural production and improving farmers' livelihoods.
The Chief Director of MoFA, Mr. Paul Siameh, said the launch officially commenced activities for the 42nd National Farmers' Day Celebration and provided the platform to announce the theme, host region, programme of activities, award arrangements and sponsorship opportunities.
He expressed appreciation to government agencies, development partners, corporate organisations, sponsors and the media for their continued support over the years, noting that the success of National Farmers' Day has always been built on strong collaboration.
Mr. Siameh assured stakeholders that the Ministry, working through the National Farmers' Day Planning Committee and Secretariat, would continue to collaborate closely with all partners to deliver a successful and memorable celebration.
The National Farmers' Day is observed annually to recognise and reward the invaluable contributions of farmers, fishers and other actors in Ghana's agricultural sector for their role in promoting food security, creating employment and advancing national development.
