The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) has presented 30 additional motorcycles to the Ministry of Food and Agriculture (MoFA) to strengthen veterinary services, disease surveillance and response across the country.
The presentation was made on Monday, August 17, 2026, as part of FAO’s continued support to Ghana’s animal health system under the World Bank-funded Pandemic Fund Programme.
The motorcycles will improve the mobility of veterinary officers and enable them to reach farming communities more effectively, particularly in areas where access to animal health services remains challenging. They are also expected to support timely disease surveillance, reporting and response to animal and zoonotic disease outbreaks.
The latest support follows an earlier presentation of vehicles, motorcycles and ICT equipment to the Ministry on June 26, 2026. At the ceremony, the Minister for Food and Agriculture, Hon. Eric Opoku, expressed appreciation to FAO, the World Bank, the World Health Organization (WHO) and other development partners for their continued support to Ghana’s animal health sector.
The Minister described the intervention as “an important investment in Ghana’s health and food security, noting that a strong animal health system is essential to protecting livestock, supporting farmers and improving agricultural productivity”.
Under the broader Pandemic Fund Programme, FAO is supporting Ghana with logistics, training and infrastructure to strengthen veterinary services and disease surveillance. The programme is expected to provide more than 260 motorcycles, 20 four-wheel-drive vehicles and nearly 300 ICT devices, as well as support the rehabilitation of six veterinary laboratories.
The Interim FAO Representative in Ghana, Ms. Priya Gujadur, had earlier reaffirmed FAO’s commitment to working with the Government of Ghana to strengthen surveillance, early warning and disease detection systems and improve the country’s preparedness to respond to emerging disease threats.
The presentation of the additional motorcycles further demonstrates the strong partnership between MoFA and FAO and their shared commitment to building a more responsive and resilient animal health system in Ghana.
