To support sustainable agricultural practices in Ghana, the International Water Management Institute (IWMI), a CGIAR Research Center, contributed 50 bags of an innovative organo-mineral fertilizer called Fortifer to the Ministry of Food and Agriculture (MoFA) on November 22, 2023, in support of this year's Farmers Day celebration. This event, held at MoFA's premises in Accra, marks a small but significant step in our collaborative journey towards enhancing food and water systems in the region.
Innovative solutions are essential in Ghana, where the challenge of waste management presents a dual threat to environmental and human health. Addressing this, IWMI West Africa, in collaboration with partners, developed an exemplary solution that Jekora Ventures Limited commercializes. By converting fecal sludge and organic household waste into a valuable resource, this partnership has pioneered the production of a safe, nutrient-rich, pelletized fertilizer aptly named the FortifierTM. This product aligns with our commitment to promoting sustainable and climate-resilient agricultural practices nationwide.
Since its certification by MoFA in 2016, FortifierTM has been a beacon of innovation in sustainable farming, demonstrating the potential to turn environmental challenges into agricultural opportunities. Its use in vegetable and cereal cultivation under rainfed and irrigated production systems is a testament to the practical application of sustainable solutions in our agricultural sector.
The Ministry appreciates IWMI West Africa's continued support and collaboration. In receiving the donation, the Deputy Minister, Hon Mohammed Hardi Tufieru expressed gratitude and reinforced the government's favorable stance towards organic fertilizer use in Ghana's agriculture. This donation is not just a contribution of resources but a symbol of the enduring partnership between MoFA and IWMI in pursuing sustainable agricultural development in the country. , He added
MoFA looks forward to furthering collaboration with IWMI and other partners in joint efforts to enhance sustainable agriculture. Such partnerships are vital in our pursuit of innovative solutions to the challenges facing our agricultural sector, contributing to food security and the overall well-being of our nation.
